ISO 9001

The principles on which ISO certification is based are developed by the International Organization for Standardization. ISO 9001 defines the requirements for quality systems.
Companies that have these requirements can be certified as conforming to ISO standards by institutes and centers affiliated with the Italian Institute for Quality Certification.

The Italian Registry and the certification process

In 2003 the Registry initiated the process for ISO 9001 certification. The entire organization was assessed by an external body, the certifying body. Among the goals were to:

  • analyze and improve business processes, management and support services related to the management of domain names;
  • increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization;
  • satisfy customers.

One of the first Reg

istry in Europe to be certified

The Italian Registry was one of the first registries in the world to obtain ISO certification.

The lack of precedents was a problem. The Institute of Informatics and Telematics is part of a public body, the Italian National Research Council, with administrative procedures that had already been established. This meant that the certification body had to begin its certification process from scratch, as it would have been impossible to apply the guidelines and best practices that had originally been designed for business and production processes.

Checks

The quality management system and daily activities are maintained also by means of:

  • the annual review by the Management on the quality level achieved, on whether objectives have been achieved, and on plans for the future;
  • inspections: these are both internal and external, and are aimed at improving services.

Certification is just the beginning of a constant quest for quality

The Registry obtained certification in 2004. The guidelines and objectives of the quality system have been redefined in recent years on the basis of structural and operational changes that have been designed to optimize procedures at the Registry.
