Becoming a Registrar

AccreditationTo become a Registrar you need to sign a contract with the .it Registry and take an accreditation test. This test assesses your technical competence in carrying out the operations under the Rules and the Synchronous Technical Guidelines. Once you've passed the test you can register and maintain .it domains in synchronous mode.
You can become a Registrar both from a previous position as a Maintainer, and without previously having had any relationship with the Registry.

The steps are:

1. complete the contract using the form. The Contract must be sent only in the Italian version. The English version is available only for a better comprehension of the document.

English version (not to be sent):

The Registrar Contract in pdf format

Italian version:

Contratto Registrar in formato pdf

2. have the contract signed by the legal representative, date it, and send it to the Registry in two copies (on unheaded or headed paper) to:
Istituto di Informatica e Telematica - CNR
Registro del ccTLD. it - Ufficio amministrazione
Via Giuseppe Moruzzi, 1
56124 PISA ITALY
IIT's legal representative signs both copies. A countersigned copy will be returned to the sender.

From a Maintainer to a Registrar:

  • The transition from a Maintainer to a Registrar requires the existence of an active contract with the Registry, signed at least 6 months before the expiry of the contract, and that the Maintainer is up to date with payments.
  • Process of accreditation (payment of 300 euros + VAT)
  • Payment of initial "prepaid" fee required to start work. This fee is equal to 10% of the value of domain names maintained on the date of passing the test, for an amount not less than 500 euros.

New Registrars

  • Payment of a one-off initial 2,200 euros + VAT
  • Accreditation (payment of 300 euros + VAT)
  • Payment of initial "prepaid" fee required to start work: 2,295 euros + VAT (510 transactions). For this payment, the Registry will invoice in advance.

Accreditation

If you wish to become a Registrar and be able to register and maintain .it domains you have to pass an accreditation test. This test entails performing specific operations, through your own client application, on the Registry's EPP server, and thus prove that you have the necessary technical skills to operate in synchronous mode.
To give you an idea of the test, the Registry provides a simulation platform on which you can test all the operations on domain names. A Registrar may also make use of technical helpdesk support and specific training courses organized by the Registry.
