During May and June, approximately 20 thousand new .it names brought us ever closer to the goal of 3 million. At present, with more than 2,900,000, we rank sixth in the top ten European Country Code Top Level Domains and ninth in the world.

Where can you register it? And what is the DNS? And yet, what is the "Country code top-level domain (ccTLD)"? You can find a precise and simple answer, to these and other questions, in this edition of "Ask CNR your doubt", dedicated to the world of the Internet names, in general, and to the .it ccTLD.

Digitaly is a campaign dedicated to familiarizing small- and medium-sized business to the digital world. CNA, Italy's national confederation of artisans, founded the project in cooperation with Amazon, Google, Registro.it and the advertising agency Seat Pagine Gialle. More than 200 companies participated in the campaign's launch on 14 April in Ravenna.

Today sees the start of Digitaly, the project carried out by CNA, in collaboration with Amazon, Google, Registro .it and Seat Pagine Gialle, to bring small and medium-sized Italian enterprises into the digital age.

The site of the marketing campaign of Registro.it is online (www.unnomeunsogno.it). The campaign is aimed at increasing awareness in the use of the Internet, with a special focus on micro, small and medium enterprises, which are the backbone of the Italian economy and that can substantially benefit from a valid use of the Internet.

The set of characters admitted in the requests for .it registration has been extended: the IDN (Internationalized Domain Names) includes the 24 official languages of the European Union. With this new feature, the characters admitted for the registration of an .it domain are made up of all the characters belonging to the charsets (editor’s note: codes) Latin-1 Supplement, Latin Extended-A, Latin Extended-B, Greek, Greek Extended and Cyrillic. Not accepted are domain names that contain characters belonging to different charsets (Latin, Greek, Cyrillic), excluding of course the suffix “.it” and names and domains belonging to the geographic tree map.

Over the course of 2014 two new DNS anycast nodes of the Registry were activated, one at the Internet eXchange point of Stockholm, Netnod, and the other at the Internet eXchange point of Frankfurt, DE-CIX. Another two new nodes are being activated at AMSIX (Amsterdam) and at LINX (London).

The maximum period of remaining in the pending Transfer has been reduced from 3 calendar days to one, so as to reduce any inconvenience linked to “non-visibility” over the net for domains subject to modifications by the Registrar.
