The summary table of the third 2025 edition of Quarter .it is now available online. Quarter .it is the four-monthly magazine of Registro .it dedicated to domain names and trends in the digital ecosystem. 

The new issue brings together data, events and activities relating to the September–December 2025 period, offering an updated overview of the performance of the .it ccTLD and the main developments in the national and international TLD landscape. 

In the final months of 2025, the .it domain recorded significant growth, with a net increase approaching 32,000 domain names - more than double compared to the same four-month period the previous year, when the difference between new registrations and deletions stood at around 14,000. The period under review shows an increase in new registrations and a marked decline in cancellations: in October alone, new registrations exceeded deletions by nearly 13,000 domains. The annual balance is also positive.

The second edition of 2025 collects and highlights key data, events, and activities from May to August, offering an updated and dynamic overview of the .it domain space and the global TLD ecosystem. 

The focus of the central quarter of the year has always been the Internet Festival (IF). The national event dedicated to the Internet, which was held in Pisa from 9 to 12 October, and which every year explores the most relevant topics related to the world of the Internet and its social implications, attracting experts in the field, enthusiasts and curious. 

A brief content overview of the first 2025 issue of Quarter .it, highlighting the main themes, is now online. Quarter .it is the quarterly web magazine by Registro .it that features statistics, events, news, and insights about the .it domain and the digital world. 

The main focus of this issue is the European NIS2 Directive: a complex challenge, but at the same time an evolutionary opportunity for the entire domain name management ecosystem, which is called upon to adopt new security standards and share greater responsibility. NIS2 cuts across and involves all areas of Registro’s activities, from legal and management areas to technical and operational aspects. 

Geographical Indications (GIs) are a key instrument for the protection and enhancement of agri-food products linked to specific European Union (EU) territories. 

Existing European GIs legislation aims to ensure the protection of product names that possess certain qualities, reputation or other characteristics attributable to their geographical origin. It has been the subject of updates and amendments, also to address and discuss the impact of the issue on domain names. 

Over the years, the Ludoteca of the Registro .it, which was set up in 2011 with the aim of promoting digital culture among the younger generations, has tried to propose training courses to schools of all levels to stimulate classroom discussion on crucial issues related to the world of the Internet. 

In recent years, the Ludoteca has placed greater focus on cybersecurity, the gender gap in STEM fields, and "Artificial Intelligence”. 

The year 2024 came to an end with a fluctuating trend for .it names between registrations and cancellations, with the latter often prevailing. Indeed, in the last four months of 2024 there was a general increase in cancellations, compared to the same period in 2023. The total difference, during the last four months of 2024, is almost 14 thousand domains, lower than the equivalent four-month period of last year (16 thousand domains).  

We do not know for sure when it will happen, but 2023 could lead us toward an important goal: 3.5 million .it names.
