The decline in the domain growth axis, the launch of the data accuracy verification system and the digital education are the three main themes of the period discussed in this issue (January-April 2024).

The first quarter opens with a decline in new .it domain names and an increase in cancellations: new registrations (over 164 thousand domains) are in lower numbers compared to the same quarter of last year (176 thousand domains). In October 2023, the stage of 3 million and a half had been reached, but the trend at the end of the year and in the first quarter has lowered the total amount of a few thousand domains.

Keeping data accurate, that is to say true and correct, is now, according to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), the cornerstone of any organisation or body, public or private, to ensure proper operation and trust in citizens in the management of digital document flow. Therefore, the Registro, in line with the European legislative framework, has also implemented a system (in force since 20 May), which makes it possible to verify the correctness of personal data, to update them and - if necessary - to delete them, if inaccurate.

Digital education remains one of the crucial challenges of the Registro, which with the Ludoteca - through lessons and workshops in classes and events - continues with the aim of informing the very young web surfers (primary and secondary schools of first and second grade) on issues relating to cybersecurity and the correct use of the Internet and, at the same time, on how to identify and avoid risks hidden in the digital world. There are many events in which the Ludoteca has participated, also at European level.

And, lastly, many updates from the world of the Internet, and more in particular, of Icann and Centr, regarding the topics of security and Web3 domains, domain names that, unlike Web 2.0 domains, reside on the public blockchain and are used as personal digital identifiers that any Internet user can employ in all apps and different use cases.  In addition, the Regulation on the protection of geographical indications for agricultural products is final, and the Digital Service Act (DSA), with the enforcement of law, comes into play on 17 February 2024.
